Replacement of the charge air cooler avoids engine damageSchwäbisch Hall, August 2011
A defective turbocharger should not be underestimated: because a mechanical damage often also affects the charge air cooler – for example due to penetrating metal shavings. If they come loose and are sucked in by the engine, this may cause fatal engine failure. Therefore, BEHR HELLA SERVICE recommends after any mechanical damage to the turbocharger that the charge air cooler also be replaced.
The charge air cooler cools the air that is compressed by the turbocharger and has a temperature of up to 150 degrees Celsius, before it reaches the combustion chamber of the engine. The cooling takes place via the ambient air (wind) or the engine coolant. The metal shavings that may have entered often cannot be removed completely by a simple flushing of the charge air cooler, which is why it is recommended in such cases to replace the charge air cooler to avoid further damage. Flushing or cleaning the charge air cooler, on the other hand, is only recommended by the experts of BEHR HELLA SERVICE if oil has accumulated there as a result of a leak at the compressor.
